On Wednesday, October 9, Europa Press reported that the National Police of Spain arrested three agricultural entrepreneurs, after having committed crimes related to the exploitation of illegal immigrants, in the state of Granada.

This investigation has been conducted since August, in a joint effort between the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate and the Granada Provincial Aliens and Border Brigade.

Two men aged 42 and 50 were reportedly arrested, as well as a woman aged 47 who exploited workers on the farms of the Alpujarra de Granada, taking advantage of their immigrant status.

Up to 15 workers were identified who declared that they were subjected to 10 hours of work per day, with a salary lower than that established for this type of agricultural work.

The operation, called “Mecinas”, began after they informed the authorities that Spanish entrepreneurs “operated several farms in which foreign nationals were employed who were in an irregular situation and, because of their vulnerable situation, were taking advantage of the working conditions established for the purpose of obtaining large economic benefits”, police statements quoted in the media indicate.
